What is the Role of a Postpartum Doula?

So, you’re wondering…what is the role of a doula?

Her guiding principles are to:

Nurture – she meets families where they are at and provides non-judgemental support

Educate- she educates the family by modeling behaviour, observing and offering options

Assess- she assesses the environment in order to assist the family as needed

Refer – she provides resources and referrals to families, and assists them to develop the skills to seek out the referrals and resources they need

The role of the doula is to be NEAR her clients offering support.

The doula provides non medical support and companionship, assists with newborn care and sibling adjustment, meal preparation and household organization.
